Wisdom Tree Village

What is Wisdom Tree Village?

Unlike traditional housing developments, Wisdom Tree Village is designed as a community rooted in the land, where homes, gardens, and shared spaces are part of one environment. The village is meant to support a way of living that includes fresh, farm-grown food produced on the land, natural surroundings, cultural connection, and opportunities to remain active, involved, and part of a caring community.

Designed for Connection to Nature

Plans for Wisdom Tree Village include small, energy-efficient homes designed for healthy living, with features such as solar power, heat pump systems, and other renewable energy sources that reduce dependence on fossil fuels. The village is being planned with sustainable infrastructure in mind, including the use of well water, rainwater catchment, and other natural resource systems that support long-term environmental balance.

The land will include open space, walking paths, and garden areas designed to keep residents close to nature as part of everyday life. Natural garden rooms with native plants and pollinator species, along with benches and quiet sitting areas, will be placed throughout the landscape so elders can walk, rest, meditate, read, or simply enjoy the surroundings. The goal is to create an environment that supports health, peace of mind, and a strong connection to the land.

The Farm, the Food, and the Land

A central part of Wisdom Tree Village is the creation of a regenerative farm and food-growing environment that allows residents to remain connected to the land and to the source of their food. The village includes a planned 20-acre farm with space for culturally relevant crops, a food forest, orchards, herb and medicinal plant gardens, and areas for egg-laying hens, pollinator beehives, and native plantings that support the natural ecosystem. A winter greenhouse will allow food to be grown year-round, including vegetables, herbs, and fungi such as mushrooms, so that fresh food can be available in every season.

The farm will also include spaces for seed saving, composting, soil building, and natural growing methods that help restore the land while producing healthy food. Gardens and growing areas will allow elders to participate at their own comfort level, whether that means working in the soil, learning traditional and regenerative practices, or simply enjoying the presence of fresh food being grown around them. The goal is not labor, but connection — to the land, to the seasons, and to the knowledge of how food is grown, prepared, and shared within a community.

Food produced at the village will support residents while also serving the surrounding community through the Medicine Lodge Farm and Market, where fresh, farm-grown, organic food will be available as the farm develops. The long-term goal is to work toward organic certification and to create a model of food sovereignty, healthy nutrition, and land-based living that benefits both the residents of Wisdom Tree Village and the wider community.

Designing Homes With Our Elders

Housing at Wisdom Tree Village is still in the planning and design phase. The intention is to work with architects, environmental planners, and the community of elders themselves to help shape what the homes will look like. Future residents will have a voice in the design process so that the housing reflects what people truly need for comfort, accessibility, and a sense of community, while also meeting environmental standards that protect the land.

The goal is to create homes that are healthy, energy-efficient, and supportive of aging in place, while allowing residents to remain connected to one another and to the natural surroundings. Design ideas include features such as covered porches, shared outdoor spaces, and walkable areas that make it easy to enjoy the outdoors in different seasons, but the final layout will be developed with community input and professional guidance to ensure the best balance between livability and environmental responsibility.

A guiding principle for the village is to leave as small a footprint on the land as possible. Careful planning will be used to preserve trees, open space, and wildlife habitat, and any trees that must be removed will be repurposed on the land for building, landscaping, or other uses. The housing design will continue to evolve as the project moves forward, with the goal of creating a place that respects both the people who live there and the land itself.

Learning, Wellness, and Community Life

Wisdom Tree Village will also include an eco-educational center and gathering space where residents and community members can take part in workshops, training programs, and shared activities throughout the year. These programs will focus on sustainable living, land stewardship, healthy aging, and skills that help people remain active, independent, and connected to their community.

Workshops may include organic growing, regenerative farming, seed saving, composting, herbal and medicinal plant use, cooking with fresh farm-grown food, and food preservation. Intergenerational programs are also planned, with opportunities for local students, agricultural programs, and volunteers to learn alongside elders through hands-on work in the gardens, greenhouse, and farm areas, so that knowledge can be shared across generations.

The center will also support wellness and community activities such as yoga, Tai Chi, walking groups, meditation, nutrition classes, and natural health practices that help elders stay strong in body and mind. Cultural gatherings will be an important part of village life, including storytelling circles, music, drumming, art, traditional crafts, and celebrations that reflect the many backgrounds of the residents. The village will make space for cultural teachings, ceremonies, seasonal gatherings, and community celebrations so that people can honor their traditions and learn from one another in a spirit of respect.

Just as important, the village is meant to be a place of joy. Along with learning and working with the land, there will be time for shared meals, festivals, creative activities, and simple moments of being together. The goal is to create a community where elders can continue to grow, laugh, celebrate, and feel that life is still full of meaning, connection, and possibility.

Indigenous and Community Stewardship

The land at Wisdom Tree Village will be cared for with a strong commitment to stewardship, conservation, and respect for the natural world. The project is guided by Indigenous values of living in balance with the land, using only what is needed, and protecting what must remain. As an Indigenous-led organization, Grandmothers’ Village Project recognizes that this land sits on the unceded territory of the Massachusett-Ponkapoag people, who are still present in the region today. Although they no longer live on this land, their history, connection, and continued presence will be honored as part of the life of the village

The design of the village will aim to preserve as much of the natural landscape as possible, keeping open space, forest areas, and wildlife habitat intact. Walking paths, garden rooms, native plantings, and quiet sitting areas will allow residents to spend time outdoors in peaceful surroundings without disturbing the balance of the land. Pollinator gardens, restored soil, and careful land management practices will help the property remain healthy for future generations.

Stewardship of the land will be shared by the residents and the wider community, with the understanding that the village is not only a place to live, but a place to care for. Whether through formal partnership or through respectful acknowledgment, the project will continue to honor the Indigenous people whose land this has always been, and will strive to create a community that reflects responsibility, gratitude, and reverence for the earth.

More Than Housing — A Different Way of Living

Wisdom Tree Village is more than a housing project. It is a vision for a different way of living — one that values elders, protects the land, and brings community back to the center of daily life. At a time when many older adults face rising costs, isolation, and limited choices, this village is being created as a model for what is possible when housing, food, health, culture, and nature are designed to work together.

The goal is not only to provide a place for residents to live, but to create a community where people can remain active, connected, and respected as they age. By combining sustainable homes, regenerative farming, cultural learning, and shared spaces, Wisdom Tree Village is intended to show that healthy living does not have to come at the expense of the earth, and that strong communities can still be built when people care for one another and for the land.

In the years ahead, the village is meant to serve as a model that can be shared with other communities who are searching for better ways to support elders while also protecting the environment. Through stewardship, cooperation, and respect for those who came before us, the project looks toward a future where people, land, and community can live in balance again.
